Internationally focused companies and financial institutions doing business in and from Ireland is the primary focus of Matheson. Many of our clients (which include more than half of the world’s 50 largest banks and the majority of the Fortune 100 companies), have business operations in the UK and / or purchase their legal services, including their Irish legal services, through the international legal services market in London. Accordingly, Matheson’s London office plays an important role in meeting the Irish legal needs of such companies and financial institutions.

As a consequence of our focus on international companies and financial companies, Matheson also works extensively with all the major US, UK and other international law firms. As many of these firms are headquartered in or have substantial offices in London, Matheson’s London office plays a key role in managing our relationships with such firms and acts as a key contact in facilitating access to the wide range of Irish legal services provided by Matheson.

In 2016 Matheson formed a dedicated Brexit Advisory Group comprising some of our most senior and specialist colleagues to provide legal expertise and insight for our clients with respect to preparation and planning for British exit from the European Union. Matheson’s history of being the Irish law firm with an international focus and client base means that we are ideally positioned to help clients understand and address those challenges and avail of those opportunities.

Tax partner, Liam Quirke, who is also Matheson’s Chairman and the firm’s former Managing Partner, manages Matheson’s London office. Liam’s entire career has been focused on meeting the Irish legal needs of international companies and financial institutions doing business in and from Ireland, with a particular emphasis on foreign direct investment, banking and financial services transactions and cross border business.

Corporate partner, Éanna Mellett, is Resident Counsel in Matheson’s London office and works closely with UK and Irish-based clients in assessing the impact of developments on their business models and legal structures, and helps implement changes required to reflect the new business realities.
