Our Asset Management and Investment Funds Group comprises a dedicated team of 60 fund professionals in total, led by 10 partners. Our significant experience of advising on private equity structures for large institutional asset managers and specialist private equity managers includes advising private equity fund of funds and feeder funds (gaining exposure to structures in Cayman, Jersey, Bermuda, Guernsey and a number of other domiciles worldwide); renewable energy funds; bank loan funds; Irish, European and US commercial and residential property funds; funds gaining exposure to structured debt products; funds gaining exposure to pharmaceutical royalty streams; and life settlement funds.

Our Private Equity Group has extensive experience in structuring and executing acquisition, financing and exit transactions, and our lawyers consistently advise on the leading private equity deals in the Irish market. We represent a broad range of Irish and international financial investors, ranging from private equity houses, banks and other financial institutions to specialist infrastructure and private equity property funds and corporate venture investors. We also advise target companies and management teams on transactional and governance matters. Our strong industry sector focus gives us a deep understanding of the issues and challenges facing our clients and allows us to provide commercial, sector-specific advice which enhances our value offering.

Matheson is ranked as a tier one funds practice group by Chambers Europe, the European Legal 500 and IFLR1000.  We have been named the Best AIFMD Law Firm in Europe 2015 and 2014 by Wealth & Finance International and received the Financial Services (International) Deal of the Year Award 2015 and 2014 for Investment Funds by Finance Dublin. Matheson was the first Irish law firm to receive the award of European Law Firm of the Year from The Hedge Fund Journal, reflecting the international recognition of our contribution to the European hedge fund sector. Our practice has also received the award of European Adviser of the Year from Funds Europe in 2011, the only Irish law firm ever to win this award.

The reputation of the Asset Management and Investment Funds Group amongst industry professionals and our involvement with the development of the industry is reflected by the appointment of partner Michael Jackson as chairman of the International Financial Services Centre Funds Group Legislative Committee, established by the Department of An Taoiseach (the Irish Prime Minister), and his 2009/2010 chairmanship of the Irish funds industry association (“Irish Funds”). Our partners Dualta Counihan, Tara Doyle, Anne-Marie Bohan, Joe Beashel, Shay Lydon, Liam Collins, Philip Lovegrove and Aiden Kelly are all members of Irish Funds committees in the areas of hedge funds and alternative investment funds, exchange traded funds, money market funds, UCITS V and VI, client assets, private equity funds, distribution in Asia and Latin America and Irish Funds events coordination. At European level, Shay Lydon is a member of the European Fund and Asset Management Association (“EFAMA”) UCITS Working Group and Liam Collins has been appointed as the Irish Funds representative to the EFAMA Financial Benchmarks Working Group. Our partners are regular speakers at industry events and contributors to European and domestic consultations and proposals on investment funds.

With our team of over 60 fund professionals working alongside Matheson’s taxation, structured finance and commercial litigation departments, we offer a comprehensive service for clients. As we are one of the few law firms in Ireland with a specialist derivatives practice, we have an unrivalled capacity to provide combined asset management, tax and derivatives advice to our clients.
