Diversity is a Strategic Business Priority for Matheson
- 50% of new Matheson partners from the last three years are female
- Over 30% of Matheson’s partners are women with 2 new female partners appointed since January 2016
- Matheson’s female partners hold key positions within influential business associations
Matheson has announced that diversity in the workplace forms a key business initiative to ensure they fully support the growth and development of their existing female workforce and to also attract top talent in the future. This is clearly seen with their consistent appointments at new partner level over the last three years which is at par with the male counterparts.
Speaking at Northern Trust’s International Women’s Day event at their Dublin office, Liz Grace, Partner, Asset Management and Investment Funds Group at Matheson, said that over the past 12 months there has been a considerable increase in the number of associations and support networks for women not only in Ireland but around the world.
“The International Women’s Day initiative is no longer a one day event, and associations such as the 30% Club and WMB now represent exceptionally strong networks which articulate a compelling business case for change. Here at Matheson we can see some very important developments, with a significant increase in the number of female leaders within our business”, Liz said.
In September 2015 Liz was named as a finalist for the WMB (Women Mean Business) annual awards, one of just five Irish businesswomen in the Empowering Women category. With support from Matheson, Liz also founded and teaches the Investment Funds Law Programme at Maynooth University, the first such academic course to be taught in an Irish university, where she is Visiting Professor and acts as an inspiring role model to future legal professionals. Referring to Liz’s work at the University, Professor Michael Doherty, Head of Maynooth University Law School says: “At university level there are more and more female undergraduates choosing to study law, and it is really important for these female students to be able to see examples of success such as Liz Grace, who has reached the very top of her profession. It is a huge boost for female students to see this”.
Matheson is also deeply involved with such networks and, on Thursday 3 March, hosted the 30% Club members at their offices, an association that prides itself on bringing change to the way men and women work together. Matheson’s Managing Partner, Michael Jackson, and Helen Kelly, Partner and Head of EU Competition and standout figure in the Irish competition law market, addressed this event which was attended by over 70 members. Michael Jackson said:
“At Matheson we have a long standing history and passion for nurturing and developing our employees irrespective of gender. We recognise the strong values associated with networks such as the 30% club and we are delighted to partner with them on their initiatives. The 30% club provides us with an excellent platform to engage with over 120 like-minded members, connect with key influencers and more importantly drive change in our workplaces in the near future.”
Also speaking at Northern Trust’s International Women’s Day event was Matheson’s Tara Doyle. In a significant appointment this year, Matheson selected Tara as Head of its Asset Management and Investment Funds practice, the largest of its kind in Ireland, to lead 10 other partners and a group of over 50 dedicated fund professionals in total within the firm. Matheson is the only Irish law firm with a female head of investment funds practice in Ireland, and Tara and her team act as legal advisers to 28% market share of Irish domiciled investment funds.
In her address today, Tara said: “I am determined to empower the women I work with to make individual choices; to support their career success; and for Matheson to attract the best future business leaders”.”
