Matheson has been named the Best AIFMD Law Firm in Europe 2014 by Wealth & Finance International. The Asset Management and Investment Funds Group at Matheson is the number one ranked funds practice in Ireland, acting for 27% of Irish domiciled investment funds by assets under management as at 30 June 2013. It is led by 10 partners and comprises over 50 fund professionals in total.

The Wealth & Finance International Alternative Investment Awards 2014 recognise commitment to the alternative investment funds industry. The awards focus on the most innovative, forward thinking and client-focused firms. Matheson’s entry was shortlisted by a peer review system, and selected by a judging panel which took into consideration votes, substantiating evidence and research.

Matheson’s Asset Management and Investment Funds team has advised on Europe’s first AIFM authorisation, and the first inward AIFMD management passport into Ireland. Its practitioners are experts in alternative investment funds including AIFs investing in pharmaceutical royalties, life settlements, property, currencies, commodities, bank loans, private equity, other hedge funds and on all hedge fund strategies including long/short, event driven, arbitrage, global macro, distressed debt and multi-strategy amongst others.

Partner Dualta Counihan notes “Most managers have spent the last 12 months implementing an AIFMD compliance action plan for their funds. As these plans are now being completed, we are seeing significant focus on new products, which will inevitably tend to be onshore to avail of the AIFMD passports that are now available”.  The funds team at Matheson also specialises in all aspects of UCITS including UCITS pursuing alternative or hedge fund strategies and Counihan notes that “We also expect the trend of the last year or more of launching alternative strategies within UCITS to continue.”

This latest award follows the group winning the Financial Services (International) Deal of the Year Award 2014 for Investment Funds by Finance Dublin.

This year’s accolades follow a number of significant awards in recent years, including the prestigious award of European Advisor of the Year by Funds Europe and Matheson’s award as first Irish law firm to be named European Law Firm of the Year by The Hedge Fund Journal, reflecting its contribution to the European hedge fund sector.
