The remarkable rise of crowdfunding during the past decade came about thanks to the widespread availability of high-speed internet and the increasing digitisation of social activity. However, crowdfunding has recently moved centre-stage in discussions about access to finance – thanks largely to the economic crisis and the resulting difficulties many smaller enterprises have experienced in obtaining finance from traditional financial institutions.
