Gearóid Carey is an associate in the Commercial Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group at Matheson. He advises in relation to general commercial disputes, principally focussing on corporate disputes and other contractual claims. He has particular experience in disputes concerning breach of warranty claims, as well as advising in relation to shareholder disputes, the termination of contracts and jurisdictional issues in respect of transnational litigation. He also has practical experience of various means of Alternative Dispute Resolution, including mediations and expert determinations, as well as particular experience in arbitrations, both domestic and international.

He is admitted as a solicitor in Ireland, Northern Ireland and in England and Wales, having trained and qualified with a leading City of London law firm. Gearóid has worked as a tutor in law at University College, Cork and he also tutors in litigation on the Law Society of Ireland professional practice courses. He has also worked as a Judicial Assistant at the Court of Appeal, London.

He has also published numerous articles in legal journals, principally focusing on issues of substantive contract law, as well as civil practice and procedure issues, including mediation and arbitration. He has co-authored numerous chapters in arbitration texts, including the Ireland chapter of the ICCA Handbook. Gearóid is also the Irish correspondent for the International Law Office (ILO) litigation newsletter. He is also a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a member of the Irish Society of Insolvency Practitioners and Dublin Solicitors Bar Association.

  • High Court proceedings involving a major fast food brand and its Irish Master Franchisee in respect of a dispute and purported termination of the Master Franchise Agreement
  • High Court proceedings in relation to a dispute under a VAT reclaim service agreement
  • High Court proceedings brought by a Bank against a cash services provider for allegedly failing to account for monies
  • High Court proceedings, involving a significant jurisdictional challenge, in respect of proceedings for breach of a distribution agreement
  • High Court proceedings brought against a stock-broking firm by former clients arising from losses suffered on contracts for differences trading accounts
  • High Court proceedings brought in respect of an alleged breach of an Oil Drilling Technical Services Agreement in Venezuela
  • High Court proceedings brought by a customer of a stockbroking firm for alleged fraudulent trading on his account
  • an ICC arbitration (and associated Court proceedings) for a jet engine manufacturer in disputes arising from the cancellation of a Regional Jet Aircraft development programme
  • an LCIA arbitration arising out of alleged breach of a waste management/handling agreement under a PPP / PFI contract
  • a group of investors' claim concerning investments in Russia in an LCIA arbitration under the UNCITRAL rules and post-award enforcement issues
  • challenging the enforcement of a €470 million Russian arbitral award
  • advising at High Court level, and in Supreme Court appeals, in respect of applications to stay court proceedings in favour of arbitration
  • Unfair prejudice/Minority oppression proceedings brought on behalf a director and shareholder of a company
