Shane Hogan is the head of the Tax department and head of Tax Controversy and Dispute Resolution at Matheson.
Shane is an internationally recognised leading tax practitioner with extensive experience in transactional as well as non-transactional international tax matters. Described as “world class” and a “trusted partner”, Shane is also a go-to practitioner for clients resolving high-stakes complex tax controversy matters.
In recent years Shane has led on many of the most significant contentious tax mandates in the Irish market, including matters before the European courts, the Irish courts and the Tax Appeals Commission as well as on a range of key competent authority and international tax controversy matters.
Experience and Education
Shane is standing tax counsel to numerous international corporations in respect of their Irish operations. Tax is a sensitive matter and, accordingly, details of the various contentious matters and restructuring projects on which Shane has advised cannot be detailed herein. However, recent cases and transactions on which Shane and his team have advised include, in broad terms:
- multiple tax disputes involving large multinational clients, many of which have proceeded to the Tax Appeals Commission as well as the Irish and European courts;
- international controversy matters including multiple MAPs and APAs with competent authorities in various jurisdictions throughout the world;
- advising Fortune 100 US corporations on group-wide international restructurings;
- representation of numerous international corporations on their establishment in Ireland;
- substantial integration projects pre- and post-mergers and acquisitions for various international clients; and
- on-going strategic advice for a range of international corporations on complex and often contentious tax matters.
