Matheson shortlisted for Global Competition Award

AUTHORs: Niall Collins, Kate McKenna, Calum Warren Services: Competition and Regulation Date: 26/01/2023

Matheson is honoured that its Competition and Regulation group has been nominated in the Regional Firm of the Year – Europe category at the 2023 Global Competition Review (GCR) Awards.  The winners will be announced at GCR’s 13th Annual Awards Ceremony on 28 March in Washington, DC.

According to the organisers, the award winner will be a firm "that has had an outstandingly successful 2022 in terms of the quality and quantity of its competition work."

Matheson partner and Head of the Competition and Regulation group, Niall Collins said; "We are delighted to be included in the shortlist of nominees for this year's GCR awards and to sit in such esteemed company.  It is a telling endorsement of the performance of this growing team over the past year, and of their skills and experience in leading on many of the largest profile competition cases in the jurisdiction.  We wish the nominees across all categories the very best of luck."

When shortlisting Matheson's performance, GCR said; "Matheson had a standout year in 2022.  Bank of Ireland tapped the firm to advise on its €8.8 billion acquisition of KBC's assets, a deal that Ireland’s Competition and Consumer Protection Commission cleared after a Phase II review subject to behavioural remedies in May 2022.  The team also won conditional clearance in Phase II from the CCPC for Ireland's other pillar bank, AIB, in its Synch mobile app joint venture a month later.  Elsewhere, Matheson acted as Irish counsel for Nvidia on its proposed $40 billion purchase of semiconductor company Arm from Softbank, which the companies abandoned over antitrust scrutiny in the UK, US, EU and China in February 2022.  In another headline merger control matter, the firm is advising Horizon Therapeutics on its proposed $27.8 billion acquisition by Amgen Pharmaceuticals.  The team advised on all recent civil enforcement matters before the CCPC and also continues to defend Iveco in ongoing follow-on Trucks litigation before the Irish courts."

Other international law firms shortlisted in the Regional Firm of the Year – Europe category include; Bredin Prat (France), Erdem & Erdem (Turkey), Karatzas & Partners (Greece) and Uría Menéndez (Spain).

Voting is open for all categories until 8:00 am on Monday, 6 February.  Click here for details.  To ensure that voting reflects the genuine views of the competition community, votes are only being accepted from employees of law firms, economic consultancies, government agencies, universities and competition advocacy organisations.

Matheson's Competition and Regulation team was also recently ranked as "Elite" in the GCR 100 survey.  Further information about the team and its services can be found here.
