The GCR 100 provides a quantitative and qualitative analysis of antitrust work by Irish law firms
Matheson's EU, Competition and Regulatory team has been ranked as "Elite" in the recently published Global Competition Review (GCR) 100 survey for Ireland. GCR said the firm is “home to one of the country's largest dedicated competition teams, with practice leader Niall Collins, fellow partners Kate McKenna and Calum Warren, as well as two senior associates,” and "is sought after in complex merger control matters, having advised on many of the most significant CCPC reviews in recent years."
The 2023 edition of the GCR 100 is a comprehensive listing of the world's best competition practices. For over two decades, it has provided a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the law firms and economic consultancies doing the most important antitrust work around the world. Firms from 57 jurisdictions are included and rankings are based on independent research conducted through GCR's annual questionnaire and as well as submissions and interviews.
GCR also highlighted that Matheson "advised Bank of Ireland on its acquisition of KBC's Irish assets, which the CCPC approved in May 2022 after a Phase II probe, subject to commitments including a bespoke funding remedy to support competition from non-bank lenders in the market. Matheson also "advised AIB during the CCPC's Phase II investigation into the Synch mobile app joint venture, which won conditional approval in June 2022."
It was also noted "on the behavioural side, Matheson advised Brokers Ireland in a CCPC investigation into allegations the insurance broker industry body breached price signalling rules, securing an end to the probe in July 2021 without agreeing commitments."
Commenting on the ranking, Niall Collins, Head of the EU, Competition and Regulatory team at Matheson said, "We are delighted that the team has received this international recognition. It is ultimately a reflection of the faith which our clients place in us, the support which we receive from our international colleagues, and of course how we work together as a team. Businesses are facing ever-increasing regulatory scrutiny in the form of a new competition and FDI screening landscape in particular, and we look forward to working collaboratively with our clients in navigating these waters in the future."
