Services: Student and Graduate Careers Date: 25/08/2025

Matheson, in association with Trinity College Dublin (TCD), is delighted to announce second year TCD Law student, Omotolani Sogbetun, as the winner of the 2025 Matheson Cara Scholarship.

The Matheson Cara Scholarship is delivered as part of our Impactful Business Programme and is named in honour of late Matheson partner, Cara O'Hagan. At Matheson, Diversity is one of our core values and the promotion of both diversity and inclusion across our business, and the wider legal profession is a key priority for us.  This scholarship is dedicated to creating opportunities, fostering talent and supporting university students to succeed in their early careers.

The scholarship is open to second year undergraduate students in TCD, including students on the Higher Education Access Route or the Disability Access Route to Education schemes, mature students and students who face barriers in third level education.

As winner of this year’s Matheson Cara Scholarship, Omotolani has enjoyed a place on Matheson’s recent Summer Internship Programme. She will also receive a bursary of €5,000 for each academic year and will have a dedicated mentor from Matheson to provide support during her university journey.

Commenting on the scholarship award, Michael Jackson, Managing Partner of Matheson, said: “Congratulations to Omotolani to whom we are delighted to award this year’s Matheson Cara Scholarship. This scholarship is an integral part of the firms Impactful Business Programme. It reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting the next generation of legal talent and fostering a more inclusive legal community, which were so important to our late partner Cara O’Hagan in whose memory the Scholarship is named. We are proud to continue our partnership with Trinity on this initiative and we were delighted to welcome Omotolani to our recent Summer Internship, which gives students a real insight into our work, people and culture.”

Omotolani Sogbetun, Cara Scholarship winner, said: “I am incredibly honoured to be awarded this bursary. As a first-generation Nigerian immigrant who has overcome significant challenges, this recognition reminds me that my background is not a barrier but a strength. Matheson and the Cara Programme have given me the confidence to see a future for myself in the legal profession, and I am deeply grateful for the support and belief they’ve shown in my journey.”

The Matheson Cara Scholarship is just one of Matheson’s many Impactful Business Programme initiatives, which encompass the firm’s diversity and inclusion, arts, environmental sustainability, and corporate social responsibility initiatives, together with its pro bono and employee wellbeing activities.
