First Step Programme
Ready to take the first step towards your future career?
The Matheson First Step Programme is designed to give you the chance to discover what it’s really like to be a Matheson lawyer, and to understand the path to becoming a solicitor in a leading internationally-focused law firm.
This six-month programme is open to first and second year undergraduate students and promises to give you an opportunity to get to know Matheson and get first-hand exposure to the work we do and the exciting clients we work alongside.
You will learn from established experts and have exceptional opportunities to develop and broaden your skills through tailored training and development sessions.
We pride ourselves on being an inclusive community, and throughout the programme you will work closely with Matheson colleagues, and also develop strong relationships with your peers. Our programme will support, encourage and enable you to develop your potential and help to guide you through the application processes for our summer intern and trainee lawyer programmes.

You will be invited to attend a series of in-person events, to gain insight into our culture , how a leading law firm operates and what it’s really like to work here.
Activities include:
- a firm insight day in May;
- a keynote seminar and networking session in August; and
- an exclusive partner Q&A session in October.
From the moment you join us, we will support you to grow and develop the skills needed to excel in your career. You’ll meet professionals from across our firm, take part in interactive workshops and gain valuable career advice from people who have been in your shoes.

Our First Step Programme will be open for applications from first and second year undergraduate students in January and February 2026.
Successful participants will be selected based on their application form.
