2023 marked the fifth anniversary of the GDPR, and ten years since the Snowden revelations. Over the past year, we saw some record-breaking fines imposed by the Data Protection Commission, and a number of important data protection decisions delivered by the CJEU which, in particular, provide some welcome clarification on the scope of liability and damages for GDPR infringements. We also received some legal certainty around how to legitimise EU-US data transfers, with the adoption of the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.
At this event, panellists discussed these developments, as well as the other key data protection headlines from 2023. They also considered some of the priority compliance challenges for companies in 2024, particularly in light of new EU digital legislation, such as the Digital Markets Act, Digital Services Act, and the expected adoption of the Artificial Intelligence Act. We were also honoured to be joined by Deputy Data Protection Commissioner, MB Donnelly, who shared some of her insights as well as priorities for 2024 for the Data Protection Commission.
