Marie is a partner in the Technology and Innovation Group at Matheson.
A recognised leader in the technology sector and in data protection , Marie’s expertise is in technology regulation, including AI, outsourcing, commercial contracts, information law, and data protection.
Marie also brings extensive experience in cyber security, crisis management, intellectual property, and consumer law.
Marie is experienced in advising both domestic and international clients on intellectual property/technology development, procurement and licensing deals, including managed services, systems integration, technology and large-scale outsourcing projects. This experience includes advising on complex technology and commercial outsourcing arrangements in all sectors, ranging from e-commerce, franchising, international trade, technology distribution, telecoms, data centre and financial services.
As many of these clients operate in innovation-led, intellectual property rich sectors, such as electronics, software and telecoms, Marie supports these clients in navigating the complex regulatory landscape throughout all aspects of the value chain, including pro-active and reactive engagement with regulators.
She also has particular experience in advising on data protection law in the context of a wide range of data protection matters which are relevant to both domestic and international clients, including advising on the data protection and privacy aspects of direct marketing initiatives and activities, international data transfers in the context of service agreements and outsourcing, multi-jurisdictional audits and general/strategic data protection compliance.
Marie is also credited for her cybersecurity work and supporting clients to prepare, prevent and respond in the context of large-scale data breaches/cyber incidents. Her experience includes advising on multi-jurisdictional breach incidents, high profile breach investigations, GDPR supervisory assessments/audits, assisting clients to manage their responses, coordinate with multiple agencies and stakeholders, and to manage potential claims and damage to reputation.
Experience and Education
Marie has advised on the following transactions, which include matters prior to joining Matheson:
- A world leading provider of search and rescue services on a successful bid for the tender appointed by the Department of Transport in Ireland for the national air and sea rescue contract, a contract valued at €800 million. This included advising on the contractual framework agreement, the development of the bespoke information technology infrastructure that will be central to the search and rescue function, the regulatory telecoms matters, engagement with ComReg (the telecoms regulator) and all contractual and data protection matters that arise in that regard;
- An AI technology developer on a multi-million euro sale of its technology to a global technology provider;
- A Global Leading Industrial company on the negotiation of a significant transaction (in the region of 1.5 billion Euro) investment in technology that will allow this company to reduce its carbon footprint and reach its net-zero targets by 2030. This is a significant transaction and the first of its kind in the world using this type of technology; and
- A multi-national technology company on a significant cyber incident involving ransomware. This included leading the incident response team for multiple jurisdictions, managing response plans, and engagement with stakeholders and management, being the key representative of the company for the Data Protection Commission.
