Our Finance and Capital Markets team consists of more than 50 lawyers and comprises of some of the most experienced finance lawyers in Ireland. The team advises on all forms of finance and capital markets transactions in Ireland.
We act for all of the major Irish banks and financial institutions, corporate borrowers and many of the world’s leading international banks, investment managers and investment funds, securities and derivatives trading houses, broker dealers, insurance companies, alternative finance providers, supranational organisations, rating agencies, trustees and other financial services firms in relation to their lending, borrowing, finance and capital markets transactions and arrangements.
We are actively involved in, and hold representative positions on, numerous industry organisations and trade bodies and have been instrumental in proposing, drafting and advising on many changes to finance and capital markets legislation in Ireland.
We are often involved in innovative and cutting-edge transactions in Ireland, from advising on market-leading acquisition financings, loan sales transactions, bond issues and refinancings, to the establishment of the first Irish repackaging platforms, to advising on the first Sukuk bond issued under Irish tax law, to advising on Europe’s first marketplace lending securitisation, to assisting a number of the current top ten aircraft lessors in establishing their leasing platforms in Ireland and to advising on a number of fund finance transactions involving the recently updated Irish investment limited partnership structure (and other regulated and unregulated Irish funds).
We were the first Irish law firm to win the European Financial Services Tax Deal of the Year as awarded by the International Tax Review.

Our Team

Alan Bunbury is a partner in the Finance and Capital Markets Department at Matheson.
Alan advises on all aspects of debt capital markets transactions with an Irish connection, including collateralised loan obligation transactions, asset-backed securities, repackagings, asset-backed commercial paper programmes, corporate bond issuances and segregated managed account structures.
Alan’s also advises Irish corporates and investment funds and their counterparties in relation to derivatives transactions, repurchase transactions, securities lending and prime brokerage arrangements and the operation of netting and set-off in Ireland.
Alan trained with Matheson and qualified as a solicitor in 2016. Alan is currently based in the firm’s London office.

Alma Campion is a partner in the Finance and Capital Markets Department, having joined the firm in 2005.
She has extensive experience in the Irish market in advising domestic and international banks, financial institutions and corporate borrowers in respect of a broad range of finance matters and regularly acts as lead counsel in numerous multi-jurisdictional transactions.
She specialises in the areas of acquisition finance, property and development finance, debt issuances, general secured and unsecured lending and syndicated lending.

Paul is a partner in the Finance and Capital Markets Department.
Paul advises on a wide variety of transaction types including syndicated and bilateral lending transactions, leveraged acquisition financings, real estate financings, receivables financings, project finance and debt restructurings.
Paul began his career at Matheson and returned to the firm in 2020 following four years in the London office of New York firm, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. Paul has particular expertise in cross-border financing and corporate transactions.

Maireadh is a partner and Co-head of the Finance and Capital Markets Department. She advises on all aspects of real estate finance, leverage finance, corporate finance, asset finance (aviation, property and shipping) and restructurings.
Maireadh’s practice is transaction based and varied and unique in the Irish market covering large international corporate financings (on both borrower and lender sides), property and development financings (through ICAVs, limited partnerships and forward fundings), corporate leveraged and acquisition financings and aviation financings (including ABS, portfolio sales, establishing new platforms and restructurings).
Maireadh also has extensive experience in fund finance, loan sales, mezzanine finance, receivables finance, invoice discounting and green and sustainable finance.

Christian Donagh is a partner in the Finance and Capital Markets Department at Matheson and is head of the firm’s Derivatives, Netting and Collateral Group.
Christian’s practice focuses on advising asset managers and investment banks doing business in and from Ireland in relation to securitisations, CLOs, fund-linked structured products, repackagings, securities lending and repos.
Christian regularly advises Irish corporates and their counterparties in relation to ISDA master agreements and collateral arrangements relating to over-the-counter derivatives transactions such as interest rate and currency linked swaps, caps and collars and on compliance with EMIR. Frequently, the firm provides legal opinions on issues relating to the enforceability of close-out netting provisions and collateral arrangements documented using industry standard or bespoke derivatives, repo and prime brokerage documentation.
Christian qualified as a solicitor with Allen & Overy in 2000 and spent several years in each of its London and Hong Kong offices. Christian joined Matheson in 2006 and became a partner in 2007.

William Foot is a partner in the Finance and Capital Markets Department in Matheson.
He has over 15 years’ experience advising financial institutions, asset managers, originators, private equity firms, investment banks, arrangers, issuers, trustees and investors on a range of debt capital markets, securitisation and structured finance transactions.
William has extensive experience in advising on a broad range of transactions involving Irish special purpose vehicles, including securitisations, repackagings, Irish law governed ETP programmes, CLOs, corporate bond issuances, asset backed commercial paper issuers, repurchase agreements and securities lending.
William also advises clients on EU prospectus, transparency and market abuse law, and listing queries relating to the listing of debt securities on Euronext Dublin, the Vienna Stock Exchange, the London Stock Exchange and the Luxembourg Stock Exchange.

Turlough Galvin is the Co-Head of the Finance and Capital Markets Department.
Prior to this, Turlough was head of the Tax Department for more than 10 years. He advises international corporations, investment banks and financial institutions doing business in and from Ireland. He specialises in all forms of structured finance, securitisation, financial services tax, fund finance, loan portfolio and debt capital markets advice. He also provides strategic advice to the financial services industry in relation to disputes arising from structured finance arrangements and tax litigation issues.
Turlough is recommended as a Tier 1 Capital Markets lawyer and a Tier 1 Tax lawyer by leading legal publications and has been included in the Legal 500 EMEA Hall of Fame.

Muireann is a partner in the Finance and Capital Markets Department.
She advises a range of Irish and international clients, including financial institutions, corporate borrowers, developers, investors, government departments and state bodies. Her practice encompasses all aspects of syndicated and bilateral lending, to include project finance, real estate and development finance, corporate and acquisition finance, and green and sustainable finance.
Project finance is a particular focus of Muireann’s practice, and she has advised many of the prominent financial institutions and sponsors in the energy and infrastructure market. She is also a regular speaker and panellist at industry events.
Prior to joining Matheson, Muireann practised at another large Irish law firm where she was also a partner.

Ruth Hunter is a partner in the Finance and Capital Markets Department.
She focuses on the area of film and television production including the negotiation and drafting of financing agreements, distribution agreements, equity and tax based financing arrangements (including Section 481 tax credit financing), talent agreements (including film rights agreements), writers agreements, actors, directors, designers and composers agreements.

Alan Keating is a partner in our Finance and Capital Markets Department and heads the firm’s New York office. Alan has been based in the New York office since 2011.
He advises international companies and financial institutions, asset managers, private equity firms, hedge funds, investment banks, alternative lenders, arrangers, issuers, rating agencies, trustees and investors on all aspects (including restructuring) of debt capital markets, securitisation (cross-border and domestic), structured finance and fund finance transactions.

Stuart is a partner in the Finance and Capital Markets Department and advises on all aspects of aviation, shipping, rail and other asset financing, trading and leasing matters on a daily basis.
He has gained considerable experience in advising on the structuring of aircraft purchase, sale, financing and leasing transactions and acts for a number of aircraft lessors, financiers and airlines in leveraged, syndicated and export credit agency backed financing facilities.

Vincent is a partner in the Finance and Capital Markets Department.
Vincent’s experience covers a range of finance and structured finance transactions, including, a variety of asset-backed securitisations, forward-flow / loan origination financings, specialty finance, non-bank lending, asset backed finance and private credit lending platforms. Vincent also has significant experience in loan portfolio transactions, particularly in the securitisation context.
Vincent began his career at Matheson and returned to the firm in 2020 following four years in the London office of Allen & Overy LLP.
As a result of this experience, Vincent has particular expertise in structured finance and securitisation.

Rory McPhillips is a partner in the Finance and Capital Markets Department.
Rory has considerable experience in advising financial institutions, equity participants, export credit agencies, commercial and investment banks, airlines, aircraft leasing companies and others in a wide range of matters over a number of years.
He represents clients in the financing and leasing of aircraft, railcars, engines, simulators, trucks and industrial equipment, and routinely handles all Irish aspects of financing structures established across multiple jurisdictions with aircraft and other assets deployed globally.

Yvonne is a partner in the Finance and Capital Markets Department and advises on all aspects of aviation, shipping, rail and other asset financing, trading and leasing matters on a daily basis.
She has gained considerable experience in advising on all aspects of the structuring of asset purchase, sale, financing and leasing transactions and acts for a number of aircraft lessors, financiers and airlines in leveraged, syndicated and export credit agency backed financing facilities.

Patrick is a member of the the Finance and Capital Markets Department at Matheson. He advises on banking, structured finance, leveraged finance and other debt finance related transactions and provides regulatory advice to banks and other financial services institutions.
Patrick regularly contributes articles to financial services and banking publications and has spoken at a number of finance conferences. He also lectures on banking and finance law subjects for a number of educational and industry bodies.

David O’Mahony is a partner in the Finance and Capital Markets Department.
David has extensive experience advising in relation to secured and unsecured lending transactions, bilateral loans, real estate finance, syndicated loans, debt restructuring, receivables finance, project finance and fund finance.
He currently acts for several leading Irish and international banks and financial institutions, non-bank lenders and a wide range of corporate borrowers.

Lisa is a partner in the Finance and Capital Markets department at Matheson.
Lisa advises corporates, private equity sponsors, asset managers, financial institutions and lenders on a wide range of international and domestic finance transactions, including fund finance, acquisition finance, corporate and investment grade finance and property finance (development and investment).

Gearoid Murphy is a partner in the firm’s Finance & Capital Markets Department.
Gearoid advises international banks, financial institutions, corporates, asset managers, investment funds and investors on a range of securitisation, structured finance and asset-based lending transactions.
