Matheson Adds New Partners

Matheson, Ireland’s largest law firm, is pleased to announce that it has appointed thirteen new partners across twelve different practice areas.  They bring the total number of partners and tax principals in the firm to 105.

The new partners have taken up their positions in the areas of;  Tax; Employment, Pensions and Benefits; Structured Finance; Asset Management; Corporate Restructuring and Insolvency; International Business; Financial Institutions; Property Finance; Technology and Innovation; Healthcare; Projects, Energy and Infrastructure, and; EU competition and Regulatory groups.

A frequent lecturer on current employment law issues and contributor to employment law publications, she is a member of the Employment Law Association of Ireland (ELAI), the Employment Committee of the Dublin Solicitor Bar Association (DSBA), the European Employment Lawyer’s Association (EELA) and the UK Employment Lawyers Association (ELA).

William Foot - Finance and Capital Markets (Structured Finance)

William advises financial institutions, asset managers, originators, investment banks, arrangers, issuers, trustees and investors on a range of debt capital markets, securitisation and structured finance transactions (including CLOs, repackagings, asset backed commercial paper issuers, derivatives, repurchase agreements and securities lending transactions).

William also advises clients on corporate bond issuances, compliance with Irish prospectus, transparency and market abuse law, and listing queries relating to the listing of debt securities on the Main Securities Market and the Global Exchange Market of Euronext Dublin.

William joins Matheson having held senior in-house roles at regulated entities such as Blackstone Ireland and Dell Bank International DAC, working on a variety of CLO, securitisation, private equity, credit risk mitigation, revolving credit facility, leasing and bond issuance transactions.  In these roles, William also advised on MiFID II, AIFMD, CRR, EMIR and Securitisation Regulation matters.

Kevin Gahan - Litigation (Corporate Restructuring and Insolvency)

Kevin has significant experience in advising insolvency practitioners in the discharge of their duties as examiners, liquidators and receivers of companies and representing financial institutions, creditor groups, and companies in connection with commercial litigation, banking disputes, security and enforcement issues and other contentious and non-contentious domestic and cross-border restructuring and insolvency matters.

A member of Restructuring & Insolvency Ireland, Kevin sits on its Law Reform sub-committee and is also a member of INSOL Europe.  He lectures on insolvency law matters on the professional practice course of the Incorporated Law Society of Ireland and to professional directors for the Institute of Directors Chartered Director Programme and is a regular contributor to industry publications.  He is a representative for restructuring and insolvency law in the Irish Government’s Ireland for Law initiative.

Anthony Gaskin - Asset Management

Anthony practices corporate and financial services law and advises many of the world's leading financial institutions, investment banks, asset management companies and service providers carrying on business in Ireland.

Anthony has advised a wide range of clients on the structuring, establishment and marketing of investment vehicles and products in Ireland and other jurisdictions.  He advises on different types of structures, including UCITS, AIFs, private funds, loan origination funds as well as fund mergers and other restructuring projects.  He also advises on the Irish interpretation and implementation of European financial services legislation, including in relation to sustainable finance initiatives.  Anthony is actively involved at industry level in Ireland and sits on a number of committees of Irish Funds, the industry representative body in Ireland.

Sarah Jayne Hanna - Corporate (International Business Group)

Sarah Jayne practises corporate law and works with international companies on the establishment, expansion and operation of their businesses in Ireland.  She also advises clients on the complex legal and commercial issues that can arise on international transactions involving Irish subsidiaries of overseas companies, including advising on a broad range of corporate reorganisations.

Sarah Jayne also advises corporate clients on a broad range of contract, corporate governance and business-related issues, including directors' duties and compliance matters.  In addition, she provides ongoing corporate advice and strategic counselling to clients, including advice in relation to distributions and complex cash repatriation strategies.

Elaine Long - Corporate (Financial Institutions Group)

Elaine provides specialist advice on corporate and regulatory issues for financial institutions with a particular focus on insurance.  Elaine has extensive experience in advising on business transfers and amalgamations involving insurers.  She also regularly advises insurers and other financial institutions on the regulatory aspects of establishment and authorisation, corporate governance and re-organisations.

Elaine joined Matheson in 2006.  Prior to joining the Financial Institutions Group, she worked in Matheson’s Corporate Restructuring and Insolvency Group where she advised on contentious and non-contentious corporate insolvency matters.  Prior to joining Matheson, Elaine worked in PwC, qualifying as a Chartered Tax Advisor.

Vincent McConnon - Finance and Capital Markets (Structured Finance)

Vincent advises international investment banks, asset managers, private equity funds, originators and issuers on a range of finance and structured finance transactions.  Vincent has particular expertise in advising both investors and originators in relation to financing lending platforms across mortgages, consumer loan and real estate finance products.  He also has extensive experience in loan portfolio transactions, on both the buy and sell side with a focus on related securitisations.  Vincent routinely advises on a variety of asset-backed securitisation transactions, such as RMBS, CMBS, Consumer Loan Securitisations and CLOs.

Vincent began his career at Matheson and returned to the firm in 2020 following four years in the London office of Allen & Overy LLP.

Daniel Peart - Finance and Capital Markets (Property Finance and Structured Finance)

Throughout his career, Daniel has advised private equity, investment banks, listed companies, arrangers and special servicers on property finance and structured finance transactions.

Daniel has over 10 years of industry experience having worked in Blackstone as chief transaction lawyer for its European structured finance and real estate debt strategies division and also in RBS as a senior transaction lawyer on its EMEA structured finance desk.  Previously, Daniel was a managing associate in Linklaters’ structured finance group.

Carlo Salizzo - Corporate (Technology and Innovation Group)

Carlo advises a wide range of clients on all manner of technology issues, with a particular focus on technology and commercial contracts, data protection and privacy, intellectual property and consumer law.  His practice reflects the ever-changing landscape of Irish and EU law and guidance, and Carlo regularly supports clients to position their businesses and products in the most effective manner possible in light of complex legal requirements.  He is also experienced in advising on issues relating to electronic signatures, Irish gambling legislation and export control.

Carlo has experience in drafting and negotiating a wide range of contracts including complex regulated outsourcing agreements, data sharing and processing agreements, supply agreements and standard terms of business, software-as-a-service agreements, distribution and sales agency agreements, intellectual property licence agreements and assignments, NDAs, manufacturing agreements and service level agreements.

Justine Sayers - Litigation (Healthcare)

Justine specialises in advising on professional indemnity claims (in particular arising from medical negligence and clinical malpractice), catastrophic personal injuries claims and product liability actions.

She advises clinical practitioners and their indemnity bodies on the defence of healthcare-related litigation, specialising in leading complex, sensitive and high-value High Court negligence claims, as well as protecting the professional reputations of the prominent practitioners she represents before regulatory bodies, statutory inquiries and coroners inquests.  In recent years, she has defended practitioners who have faced serious allegations including fraud, sexual impropriety and gross negligence amounting to professional misconduct.  Justine also advises a leading laboratory in the defence of litigation arising from screening services provided to the HSE under the CervicalCheck Screening Programme.

Seán Scally - Corporate (Projects, Energy and Infrastructure)

Seán advises developers, lenders and sponsors on the development, construction, financing and operation of energy and infrastructure assets (conventional and renewable energy assets, telecoms infrastructure, PPPs) and also on the acquisition / disposal of large scale energy and infrastructure assets.

He has a particular specialism in the areas of electricity and gas market regulation and trading, and has also advised on the majority of Corporate PPAs which have been concluded in Ireland to date.

Prior to working in the legal sector, Seán completed a degree in Mechanical Engineering and worked for a number of years in the medical device industry.  As a former engineer, Seán takes a practical, problem-solving approach to the matters he advises on.

Calum Warren - Corporate (EU Competition and Regulatory)

Calum advises on Irish and EU competition and regulatory law including merger control, competition compliance and investigations, sector regulation, public procurement, state aid and general EU law.  He has in-depth experience in financial services, telecommunications and media (TMT), agri-business, energy, manufacturing, healthcare, food & beverages and transport.

Calum advises on clearance strategies for M&A transactions before the CCPC and the European Commission, including transactions subject to in-depth Phase 2 investigations and remedies negotiations.  He also specialises in managing competition investigations, including representation during on-site inspections (‘dawn raids’), whistle-blower applications, engagement with regulators and follow-on litigation before the Irish and EU courts.  He has significant expertise in advising on compliance issues, including competitor collaborations, the competition aspects of distribution arrangements and technology transfer / IP arrangements and internal compliance programmes.

Prior to joining Matheson, he worked at leading international law firms in Brussels and London, enabling him to bring considerable multi-jurisdictional perspective to his role.
