Aisling Kavanagh is a partner in Matheson’s Disputes and Investigations team.
Aisling specialises in complex, high stakes insurance coverage disputes. She also practices in commercial and financial services dispute resolution, and arbitration.
Aisling advises domestic and international clients on policy wording interpretation, complex coverage disputes, D&O claims, professional indemnity claims, including any potential third party liability, and subrogation claims.
Experience and Education
Aisling’s current and more recent highlights include:
- Advising four of world’s largest Aircraft Leasing Companies in proceedings involving 42 global insurers/syndicates, with claims totalling approximately $1.7 billion—the largest insurance coverage claims to come before the Irish courts;
- Representing a number of leading insurers with respect to COVID-19 business interruption test cases, in particular acting for an international insurer who was successful in one of Ireland’s first COVID-19 business interruption test cases before the Commercial Court;
- Drafting endorsements, amendments and policy wordings for multiple insurers (including life insurers) following implementation of the Consumer Insurance Contracts Act 2019;
- Acting in a successful motion to stay Commercial Court proceedings for arbitration where the other party was arguing that the dispute was non-arbitrable on public policy grounds;
- Advising liability insurers in respect of a highly-technical insurance coverage dispute, proceeding to LCIA arbitration with an Irish seat.

Aisling has contributed to the Irish chapters for Chambers Global Practice Guide for Insurance, and has also published articles in a number of industry publications, including the International Law Office Litigation Newsletter and Insurance Newsletter, and the Insurance Institute’s The Insider magazine.
Aisling is a lecturer on insurance claims for the Law Society Diploma of Insurance Law, and is a member of the Insurance Institute of Ireland. Aisling has also presented in a series of seminars on the Consumer Insurance Contracts Act 2019 with Insurance Ireland.
