Philip is a partner in the Asset Management Department and has been with Matheson for twenty five years. He specialises in advising on the establishment and operation of investment funds in Ireland.

Philip’s experience includes advising leading international financial institutions and asset management companies on structuring and offering fund products in Ireland and particularly in relation to exchange traded funds, innovative and complex products authorised as UCITS and private assets products.

Philip is a long-standing member of the Irish Funds ETF Working Group and has represented Ireland on the EFAMA ETF Task Force.

He specialises in advising managers on bringing innovative ETFs to market, including actively managed products, multi asset and emerging market funds and, more generally, on complex funds which are structured using the full range of flexibilities available under the UCITS regime. He has also advised extensively on the establishment of alternative investment and private assets products.

He has advised clients and participated in the Irish fund industry’s implementation of the European Commission’s Climate Action Plan for investment funds and asset managers and has recently been at the forefront of the industry’s succesful engagement with the Central Bank on ETF-specific issues, such as exchange traded share classes and portfolio transparency.

Philip is one of Matheson’s Diversity and Inclusion Ambassadors and the vice chair of the firm’s Mindful Business Charter committee.

Experience and Education

  • Advising on the establishment and operation of market leading active and passive ETF platforms and on all aspects of exchange traded funds.
  • Advising on the establishment and authorisation of complex, structured products within the UCITS framework.
  • Advising on the establishment of investment funds with sustainable investment an carbon reduction objectives and on funds tracking Paris-Aligned and carbon transition benchmarks.
  • Advising on the establishment and restructuring of fund platforms for compliance with the updated direct lending framework provided by Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive II.
  • Advising on the use of multi-manager fund platforms and negotiating related commercial agreements.
  • Advising on UCITS products which give investors indirect exposure to commodity markets, loan markets and emerging markets, including the China A Share market, QFII and RQFII and the Stock and Bond Connect programmes.
  • Advising on the use of derivative instruments for investment purposes at a share class level within UCITS.
  • Advising on the launch of Irish Shariah investment funds.
  • Advising on the acquisition of Irish-based fund servicing businesses.
  • Qualified as a solicitor in Ireland
