Angela is a partner in Matheson’s Disputes and Investigations Group.

She brings over 17 years’ experience in advising in some of the most significant litigation to come before the Irish Courts in recent years.

She was one of the lead partners representing four of the world’s leading Aircraft Leasing Companies in insurance coverage claims in four separate sets of proceedings in what were the largest insurance coverage claims to ever come before the Irish courts, with similar proceedings being run in the UK and the US.

Angela won Lawyer of the Year – Aviation Disputes – at the Women in Business Law Awards EMEA in 2023 and was nominated again in this category in 2024.

Angela advises on complex commercial, contractual, financial services and technology disputes. Her practice encompasses financial services disputes, shareholder disputes, insurance coverage matters, aviation and tech litigation, regulatory investigations, and both contentious and non-contentious corporate restructuring and insolvency.

Angela regularly leads high-stakes Commercial Court litigation, with particular expertise in interlocutory applications, alternative dispute resolution, multi-party settlements and cross-border disputes.

Recognised consistently for her strategic approach, she is recommended by Legal 500 in Dispute Resolution and noted as a “Key Lawyer” in Litigation.  In 2023, Angela was named Lawyer of the Year – Aviation Disputes at the Women in Business Law Awards EMEA, and received a further nomination in this category in 2024.

Angela’s regulatory practice focuses on advising financial services and professional services clients on engagements with regulatory authorities, including internal and external investigations, risk mitigation strategies, remediation programmes and enforcement proceedings. She is familiar with the regulated environment in which they operate, having spent a year on secondment as Head of Legal at Irish Bank Resolution Corporation Limited, where she managed an extensive litigation book, dealt with customer remediation projects and regulatory obligations and was its Data Protection Officer.

Her client base includes financial institutions, insurers and reinsurers, fund managers, fintech companies, domestic and international corporations, directors and senior executives, insolvency practitioners, shareholders and creditors.

 

 

A strong advocate for innovation in legal practice, Angela collaborates closely with Matheson’s Digital Services Group to integrate legal technology and AI into dispute resolution, driving greater efficiency and value for clients. She is a member of the Commercial Litigation Association of Ireland Committee responsible for updating the CLAI Good Practice Discovery Guide in 2025.

Angela is an active contributor to the legal community, serving on various committees in Commercial Litigation, Dispute Resolution, Investigations and Insolvency, and regularly contributing thought leadership in these areas. She tutors in the Law Society of Ireland and served as co-chair of Dublin International Disputes Week 2025. She will continue in this role for 2026.

 

Experience and Education

Angela’s current highlights include:

  • Representing a global provider of commercial jet engine and aircraft leasing services in Commercial Court litigation related to insurance coverage for the loss/detention of aircraft and engines following the Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022.
  • Representing four of the world’s leading Aircraft Leasing Companies, Avolon Aerospace Leasing Limited, BOC Aviation Limited, Nordic Capital DAC and Hermes in insurance coverage claims in four separate sets of proceedings (involving some 42 insurers/syndicates across the globe).
  • Representing Aviva in a landmark subrogation claim against Electricity Supply Board (“ESB”), Aviva’s successful appeal to the Supreme Court which made new law in area of negligence and remittal back to the High Court for issues of causation and quantum and advising Aviva in the context of mediating the remaining outstanding issues with ESB in respect of both the landmark UCC action, and another 135 Aviva policyholder claims.
  • Representing a major domestic bank in an insurance coverage dispute in relation to the recovery of multi-million dollar losses, arising from a very high profile fraud in a US subsidiary.
  • Representing various alternative investment fund managers and fund administrators with respect to potential regulatory investigation and potential litigation.
  • Representing a firm in relation to professional negligence proceedings in one of the largest damages lawsuits in the history of the state for professional negligence.
  • Representing Managers of the International Registry of Mobile Assets, in commercial court applications concerning discharge of interests on the International Registry.
  • Acting in a multi-million euro professional negligence action against a major firm of solicitors in relation to the administration of one the country’s largest estates.
  • Acting in high-profile Commercial Court proceedings with regard to a shareholder dispute in connection with one of the largest cinema groups in Ireland.
  • Advising the Special Liquidators of IBRC with regard to managing an extensive litigation book, which involved defending some very high profile and complex mis-selling cases taken against the Wealth Management Division of Anglo Irish Bank.
  • Advising financial institutions in relation to the enforcement of security, recovery of debt and enforcement options, commercial court cases, mediations and settlements involving defaulting borrowers and guarantee claims.
  • Advising directors and shareholders of companies on corporate governance and compliance issues and on matters relating to the Office of the Director of Corporate Enforcement, restriction and disqualification proceedings and Section 205 proceedings.
  • Advising large financial institutions in relation to the filing of significant and complex claims in the liquidation of IBRC and also acted for the subordinated bondholders in filing their claims in the IBRC liquidation, seeking the payment of principal, pre- and post-contractual interest in respect of the subordinated notes.

  • Angela has also been a tutor and lecturer for the last number of years on the Law Society of Ireland Professional Practice Course, for which she is able to draw upon her extensive professional experience.
  • She is a committee member of the Commercial Law Committee of the Dublin Solicitors Bar Association, the largest independent association of solicitors in Ireland, with a membership of over 3,000 practitioners. Angela is responsible for organising all DSBA Commercial Law Committee Seminars. Angela is also a former Committee Member and current member of the Irish Society of Insolvency Practitioners and INSOL.
  • Angela also regularly organises and speaks at events within Matheson and external events to assist both clients and fellow practitioners in understanding the latest developments in her area.
  • She is a member of the Commercial Litigation Association of Ireland Committee responsible for updating the CLAI Good Practice Discovery Guide in 2025.
  • She tutors in the Law Society of Ireland and served as co-chair of Dublin International Disputes Week 2025. She will continue in this role for 2026.
